EVALUATION: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My
trailer challenges the conventions of most horror films, starting off with a
“youth-drama-y” type approach in stead of jumping straight in with the fast
pasted action I chose to build up to it With the setting of the narrative, a
film that inspired me to do this was horror film Unfriended, still to come out
this year, as you can see it very much sets the tone of an online social media
presence And then that changes very early on when the sinister feel to trailer
sets in.
I
chose to challenge the conventions in this particular area and set the ‘horror’
tone much later on, as I will explain.
So the
trailer starts off with the approval notice, A typical convention of all
trailers that appear at the very start for about 4-5 seconds. Then the
institution and distribution company’s film four and supernatural studios
appear along with Intense the title of the film
So the
first clip is of myself playing character Ree, setting up the camera on the
tripod and discussing the “plan of action” for the camping trip. as you can see
I’ve edited the date in the corner of each of the found footage shots to kind
of enforce that are obviously shaky to give the self taken effect.
Fade
to black transition and then a star review from a film magazine, this again is
a typical convention of trailer to get people to want to watch the film.
then a
clip introducing the other characters Paige to start with low key lighting
which most of the scenes are shot in to create an eery atmosphere. Nisha and Phoebe This was originally one full
scene but I chose to split it with inter title “With friends you’re always
safe” so sort of build the tension, like the audience is awaiting a “but..”
With a
cross zoom transition I chosen to have close up shots of each of the
antagonists eyes with them each blinking once split with the eye shots are each
of them taking part in recreational activities such as taking drugs, smoking
and drinking alcohol ect.
I chose to do this to follow
Then
jumping back to the introducing found footage shot Ree states that its going to
be the best trip ever” and this is basically the turning point on the trailer,
the music changes to a sort of sinister toy box sound.
Inter
title Or so they thought… again enforces the turning point. Inter tiles
supporting the narrative are a main convention of trailers.
This is first
scene on the trailer where the audience sees the killer’s back, I chose to
leave it this late -about a minute in, to not immediately try and scare the
audience and let it build up. So in the scene the Villain walks away from the
camera and with a sinister laugh.
Inter title of
another review, tenses the audience.
Next shot is Ree
looking around scared. This is where I chose to build up the pace quite quickly
and have cross cutting take over effect with point of a second shots of the
villain with the girls each having a worrying/scared moment of unease with as
sound effect of television static. Then cuts to phoebe saying she can hear
someone moving.
This often
happening in trailers were the soon to be victims saying that something has
changed and doesn’t feel right, I adhered to this convention
Cuts to villain
and static, Then Paige (not clear) for obvious reasons to not show everyone
dying in the trailer, she’s hanging from a tree again cross cut with point of a
second shots of the villain again getting closer and closer together.
Then the music
bangs, scream sound effect and flashing for 2 points of a second inter title
RUN the cuts to Ree running through a forest panting. Then flashing inter title
HIDE with a running POV and phoebe shouting Help. Inter title HE WILL HUNT YOU
and HE WILL KILL YOU. The villain then turns with knife in hand and then cuts
to black for a second and a half. Then he appears and jumps towards the camera
grunting. Ree is then lying on the floor dead and then the title of the films
appears, with again the static sound effect and seeing the villain for point of
a second between the Title, date, and credits screens.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For my poster I decided to have a quite
large tile on my poster and use the same one across all my print products
(excluding the billboard) this was because I felt that the products with the
villain of the film need a darker look to them. I created my masthead from scratch
and decided to go for an almost an eroding look of the letters, the background
the texted is laid over is a faded grey to black that meets in the middle, I
did this as I thought it subtly suited the film’s narrative of having a group
of innocent girls faced off with a dark minded killer.
Following Horror
film conventions for the layout of the poster I went for a sort of minimalistic
look and decide on having the image obviously the main focus of attention with
the cast members along the top in a small front, below that the date and then
the strapline/slogan for the film “Evil doesn’t do camping” which I think is
quite sharp and lets the audience know what exactly the film is about. Then the
title of the film goes across the image. The ‘available in Imax and 3D” line
and then with the institutional information at the bottom which is of course
needed to give a professional/ real look.
For my magazine
I decided on a horror theme to obviously suit the film trailer I made, I chose
to follow the layout of Empire magazines Sherlock Holmes cover as I could
envision my magazine looking like that one, following the conventions of film
magazines I have a masthead being the largest text on the page. Image – midshot
and in relation to the issue type, so a horror/ eerie type image. Pug
headlines; cover lines, to draw the audience in about what it has to offer.
Extras like the barcode, price and date.
My DVD
covers adheres to the conventions of one. On the front I have, an Image
relevant to the genre (horror) And the Title of the film with the actor’s names
across the top. Tag line – draws in the audience’s attention.
Allowing them to grasp what the film is about. Film classification on the front
Industry reviews – gives the film critical acclaim.
On the back
Blurb or synopsis on the
back of the DVD cover giving information about the narrative yet not giving to
much away. It also asks questions to the audience to
create enigmas making them want to find out more “Can they survive?” Bonus
features – the audience is getting inside information about the film,
interviews with actors, bloopers make up tutorials and deleted scenes. The
production company –Supernatural studios, film for, film London. Film
classification – may attract the audience to watch an older or younger
film. Screen grabs – gives the audience an insight
into the film. Table with Ratings, Running Time,
Certification Information, Technical Specs, Producer
Distributor Information and extras like the Barcode.
With my
billboard I decided a different approach and almost completely change its look,
so it looks different to the other products, I did this because i felt like i
was using the same image of just the villain of the film on the front of the
DVD cover, poster and magazine, So in this sense I’m kind of challenging the
conventions of film print products, how they’re brand is always recognised no
matter what the product. However I have seen this happen with certain films,
and thy do it as a way to ‘introduce all the characters. I thought with the
billboard dimensions being larger I could have the 4 antagonists of the film
portrayed. The image i went for was the 4 girl facing the camera, all on
different levels, i felt like this was a strong image with them all looking
slightly lost, then with the glowing eyes behind them from the darkness i felt
gave a sort of spooky edge.
